about

This is a George Gershwin aria from the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald sang a popular version in 1957, the band Sublime made it popular with the youth of the 1990s and 2000s, and countless other artists have put their own spin on it. This is my version.

The only instruments I used are one acoustic guitar and my voice. The "brushes on snare" sounds are my hands on the back of the guitar's body. The "upright bass" sound is a bassline played with my thumb and then pitch-shifted down an octave. The "orchestra plucking" sound is a palm-muted bar chord pitch-shifted up an octave.

This was recorded with Reaper on a MacBook Pro through one Shure SM58 in a duplex on the east side of Milwaukee.

lyrics

Summertime and the living's easy
Catfish are jumping and the cotton is high
Your daddy's rich and your mama's good looking
So hush little baby, don't you cry

One of these mornings, you're going to rise up singing
Then you'll spread your wings and take to the sky
But until that morning, nothing can harm you
With daddy and mama standing by
