Week 11 - Pre-Diabetes: It's A Bitch (03-17-18)

from Song A Week, Volume 3 by James Tristan Redding

/

lyrics

Take a seat and listen up now let me tell you all a tale
An epic saga for the ages strange and true
There’s a hero and a villain and a battle life or death
In a land that’s not so far from me and you

The legend goes the man who played an unexpected central role
Against the odds as the protagonist therein
He paid a visit to his doctor for a physical exam
When something beeped and caused our story to begin

You see the doctor took a sample of his blood to analyze
Expecting all the normal numbers to appear
But the machine said “OMG” and then the doctor scratched his head
He checked the charts, compared results and cried “Oh dear”

“My friend you have what’s called pre-diabetes,” said the Doc,
“You need to make some hardcore changes to your life”
Aghast, our man took pause a deep reflection setting in,
Then asked politely, “Won’t you help me to survive?”

Pre-diabetes, it’s a bitch
For anyone who loves to eat dessert
Pre-diabetes, a dirty word
Put the milk shake down and no one needs to get hurt

At once the doctor nodded YES and started writing down ideas
Like “take a walk” and “eat your vegetables” of course
Our central character was stunned, it was so simple after all
A few more carrots and a lot more time outdoors

He stood up slow grabbed his coat and made his way toward the door
Took a breathe and thanked the doctor for his time
And at the front desk he made sure they got his next appointment down
Reviewed the date and signed his full name on the line

Now this is where it all gets real, for it was 2 years after that
Until our man-at-arms returned to meet his fate
For over seven hundred days he tried to do as he’d been told
Anticipating it would all be worth the wait

So on the morning of Saint Patrick’s in the year Two Oh One Eight
The doctor checked our brave young patient’s A1C
From 5.9 two years ago it fell to 5.2 today
Which means our friend is now pre-diabetes free

Pre-diabetes, it’s a bitch
For anyone who loves to eat dessert
Pre-diabetes, a dirty word
Put the milk shake down and no one needs to get hurt

Not all stories have a moral some are only borne of chance
Others told for pure effect or comic fun
This one brings a message clear get your glucose checked today
And a couple carrots never killed anyone
