about

Co-written with Ethan Keller.

lyrics

Ninety miles from Tulsa where the steak is chicken fried
Found a hideout off the highway and the sign said, "Come Inside"
At the bar a weathered face with a voice like motor oil
Said, "What brings your spinning wheels down around this southern soil?"

I said, "Maybe I don't know you, but I know you've seen some things
Won't you tell me 'bout this town? Must be more than what it seems"

He said, "If I remember right I was working my first night
When I met the one and only Charley Pride
And that spring with all the rain when the roof was caving in
Funny now but I wasn’t laughing then"

Then a hundred other stories and a couple pints of ale
And he poured another while I told a few
He said, "your glass is never empty when you fill it with a tale;
Pretty soon I’ll pour a story 'bout you"

Well I finished up my drink and I looked him up and down
I said, “I'll tell no lies if you pour another round"
Told him I'm from nowhere special as he washed another glass
But I shared about my life since he was kind enough to ask

He said, "I guess that you don't know me, but son we may just find
You got aces up your sleeve and I'm more than meets the eye"

So he talked about the time back in 1969
When they all saw Waylon wasted at the bar
And the 4th of one July when he taught his son to drive
Until he crashed right through the front door in the car

Then a hundred other stories and a couple pints of ale
And he poured another as I told a few
He said, "your glass is never empty when you fill it with a tale
Pretty soon I’ll pour a story 'bout you"

I left a fifty on the counter as I headed for the road
Still laughing from the stories we told
Then before I shut the door I looked over with smile
And said I’ll see you in a hundred thousand miles
