240124: Same Old Self

from Leap Songs, Part 3 by James Tristan Redding

/

lyrics

Five o'clock this morning thought I heard a voice
Pretty hard to listen over all the noise
Still it seemed familiar and ever since I was a boy
Here and there I've wondered could I hear a voice

Once I got real quiet the voice said gimme' love
Nothing seems to fill me up the way that feeling does
I asked if it was speaking from below or up above
The voice said does it matter wherever love is love

How quiet can I be is it her is it me
How patient can I be I guess we'll wait and see

Soon I started wondering this little voice I heard
What if I'm receiving some kind of holy words
What if I'm supposed to save the world or even worse
What if God can't reach me and the words are mine not hers

I should thank my sponsor that I can count to twelve
And I should thank my maker today I have my health
Every day I'm listening but I still can't really tell
Whether it's her voice I hear or just my same old self
