They Came But Did Not See (240216)

from Loose Licks by James Tristan Redding

about

Co-written with John Lomax III.

lyrics

Searchers came and searchers went
And everywhere they smelled the scent
Of a people brave and a people bold
Who lived for aeons since days of old

And when the searchers finally left
From every rock and every cleft
Strange little eyes popped into view
As silent as the mornings dew

They assembled and all agreed
The leader stood and he decreed
“To outlast the passing years
Learn when and how to disappear”

I was born a searching man
With searching heart searching hands
I searched the earth high and low
Until one night ten years ago

Two eyes appeared as night fell down
I followed close without a sound
Last time I saw my family
Thank God they came but did not see
